It Really Is a Wonderful Life When You Stop and Look Around
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is a treasured Christmas movie in our household. My husband and I watch it each year, marveling at the way the main character, George Bailey (played by Jimmy Stewart), struggles with what he perceives as conditions holding him back from his dreams. With the help of an ‘angel-in-training’ named Clarence, George realizes he has all he wants, and much more.
George’s integrity toward others is a foundation that surpasses any material wealth people often chase. Indeed, the way he cares for people, even those facing difficult times, reveals what truly matters in life. I can think of no better model for how to live each day.
Memory Lane
When we moved to Pennsylvania, we discovered that Jimmy Stewart’s hometown of Indiana, PA, has a museum dedicated to his many achievements. During the holiday season, we made the short drive, and how fun it was to see him come to life through relics and memorabilia. Yes, we named our dog after George Bailey’s daughter, Zuzu!
An interesting fact about the movie—when it was released in 1946, it was considered a box-office failure. It didn’t become a Christmas classic until the copyright lapsed and broadcasters were able to show it royalty-free. My takeaway is to keep the faith for a project you are working on. You never know when it might be a huge success!
Timeless Lessons
Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the movie, each with a tip in hopes that they provide reminders of what is truly important during this holiday season and all year long.
“Remember, George: no man is a failure who has friends.” -Clarence
Keep in touch with people who you love. You both will benefit from the connection.
“Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” – Clarence
Never underestimate your value. You matter. Your good deeds ripple in ways you aren’t even aware of.
“Teacher says, ‘Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.’” -Zuzu Bailey
Perhaps the most famous line from the movie (whether true or not!), this is a testament to the perseverance shown by George and Clarence towards their pursuit of excellence – for themselves and others. Stay your course for the good things you want to achieve. Your dreams can happen when you don’t give up.
If you find time to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life,” whether for the first time or a repeat, I wonder what you’ll discover as inspiration for 2025?
Thank you for this! It’s a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies and it never fails to make me cry. The idea that all lives have consequence, that each of us make a difference, the gift that George Bailey is given – to see precisely how his life is of consequence- all that is universal and timeless. I also have my favorite lines!
Betty, how fun that this is your favorite movie! If you are ever in central PA, I highly recommend the museum. The little town is so sweet, too. The traffic signals (that tell you when to cross the street) are spoken with Jimmy Stewart’s voice! Hope all is well with you. Happy Holidays!
